Citizen’s Coalition for Electoral Democracy in Uganda (CCEDU) flags off its Votability Caravan, beginning its countrywide tour from Bugembe Township in Jinja district.

The caravan utilizes ‘infotainment’ to mobilize Ugandans aged 18 and above to actively participate in the on-going national voters’ register update exercise. It is taking place at each and every parish/ward countrywide.

At Bugembe Township, over 600 people from Jinja and nearby areas convene to witness the Votability caravan flag-off.

Speakers including, CCEDU Advisory Board Member and Coordinator, James Waiswa and Crispy Kaheru respectively, and OC Police Bugembe, Francis Musamali delivered motivational messages to the public encouraging them to stay vigilant during the electoral cycle ahead of 2016 general elections.

The National Voters Register Update exercise aims at: registering eligible Ugandan citizens of eighteen (18) years and above who did not register during the national ID registration exercise.

It is giving an opportunity to voters who wish to move to new voting locations than those that were portrayed during national ID registration. This provides a chance to eligible voters to confirm their particulars appear correctly on the Voters’ Register at the voting locations of their choice.

The comic skits acted at the flag-off event emphasized the importance of the on-going Update exercise. This is a cornerstone to making a clean, credible and reliable voters register. This will help avert possible voter register related electoral malpractices.

The Votability caravan will traverse the whole country between 18th and 30th April, 2015 and will have major activations in: Jinja, Iganga, Mbale, Tororo, Soroti, Dokolo, Gulu, Arua, Kagadi, Fort Portal, Kabale, Mubende, Kalungu, and Wakiso districts.
